THREE MAIN TYPES OF PROTEIN
It’s important to understand protein, where it comes from and how each source of protein works for our body. Each food source has a different effect on us depending on which amino acids it contain and how fast the absorption and conversion is. There are high quality and low quality protein. Meat and dairy products are good samples of high quality protein. It has all the essential amino acids. Vegetables, on the other hand, are classified as low quality and lack atleast one of the nine essential amino acids. Understanding the different digestion and absorption rate of these protein source will help in choosing the perfect diet specially for those who are serious body builders and athletes. There are three main types of protein. These are whey protein, casein protien and egg albumin (egg whites).
Whey Protein. This is the by product of cheese. Whey protein is very easy to digest making it ideal for body builders and serious athletes to use during workout and post-workout. Whey’s effect can take place 30 minutes after intake. Whey is excellent for the post workout time because there is a great need for amino acids to begin muscle repair. Whey is also highly bioavailable, it has the highest biological value of any protein source. A whey product is considered as the best choice for those looking for a protein product that can be readily used by the body to build mass. You can usually buy these on shops and it is used in shakes. Most whey products come in powder form.
Casein. Casein is extracted from the milk through ultra filtration and without the use of chemicals.the protein that is found in milk and takes the longest for the body to digest and absorb. The body works slower during sleep so the small amount of protein released is just right for the slow repairing of muscles and tissues. Most body builders take a glass of milk at night because of this. Since this has a slow absorption and digesting rate, people often mistake it for a low quality protein when this is actually the contrary. Another point thatpeople should understand is that Casein is the only protein one should be taking before going to sleep because the body needs to be sustained for six to eight hours while sleep and without food. Proteins from milk are casein and it has about 11 grams of protein per 250 ml (a big glass) before bed will support your body through the night.
Egg Albumin. Considered as one of the best form of naturalprotein, egg albumin us also called egg protein and these specifically come from egg whites. If you ever wonder why eggs are usually part of breakfast and takes an hour and half to three hours to digest and absord. Egg yolks provide healthy fats, as well as highly bioavailable iron, riboflavin, folate, vitamins B12, D and E, and choline. Choline is very important to enhance and strengthen brain function.
